Wayback Machine: The UN debates Zionism - Adam Horowitz

The above video is of the UN debate over whether Zionism is a form of racism, which took place 36 years ago this past Thursday. One thing that struck me as I watched it was how similar much of the discourse was to today, especially from Israel's defenders.

Occupy teachers/profs: end 1%’s criminal wars by teaching war laws, facts - Washington Blog

Of all the laws to know, when war is lawful or criminal is arguably the most important.

Of all the lessons of history, the sacrifices of all our families through two world wars for the legal victory that strictly limits nations’ use of war is arguably the most important.

Teachers and professors could end criminal US wars by teaching the 99% this one law and this one history lesson.

War law only allows for self-defense; similar to the law for you and me on the street. This article walks you through this one simple law, and the facts of current US wars that prove they are not even close to lawful. It also shows that we now know all “reasons” for war were known to be lies as they were told. The law embodies the history that legally ended war, a victory the 99% can reclaim through enforcement of existing law.

This article provides expert testimony that current US wars are not close to lawful.

This article series shows the criminal history of the US over the last 150 years to break treaties, lie, and kill to control territory and resources.

Criminal US wars today kill millions, injure billions, and cost trillions of our dollars. The criminals are the 1%’s “leadership” in government, military, and corporate media. The 99% are recognizing these crimes, will arrest the criminals among the 1%, and create policies that maximize the benefits of life for 100% of humanity.

Antibiotics Promote Obesity, Diabetes, Metabolic Syndrome

Antibiotics Promote Obesity, Diabetes, Metabolic Syndrome by Anthony Gucciardi

Antibiotics, recently linked to skyrocketing mental illness rates, are now being identified as a player in the soaring obesity rates around the globe.

Previously, it was revealed that excessive antibiotic usage may also be responsible for spawning drug-resistant superbugs that continue to emerge worldwide.

The reason that antibiotics are potentially making you fat, mentally unhealthy, and suffer from gut problems has to do with the way it affects bacteria within your gut. While antibiotics do kill harmful ‘bad’ bacteria as intended, they also destroy ‘good’ bacteria in the gut which help to regulate more than just gut health. In fact, studies are finding that gut bacteria may be responsible for regulating overall health, including mental health and stability.

In one study regarding the depletion of ‘good’ bacteria in the gut, researchers explained how antibiotics administered to mice ultimately resulted in altered behaviors far beyond diarrhea and pain:
“It may be that those changes in gut bacteria not only contribute to the generation of gut symptoms, like diarrhea or pain, but may also contribute to this altered behavior that we see in those patients,” said researcher Stephen Collins, of the Farncombe Family Digestive Health Research Institute at McMaster University in Ontario, Canada.
Experts are now drawing a conclusion between depleted beneficial bacteria and obesity, as more information comes out over the dangers and repercussions of antibiotic use. Dr. Martin Blaser of New York University Langone Medical Center is one such expert, who has been actively studying the effects of antibiotics on gut bacteria.

Dr. Blaser summarized his findings on the subject, revealing how antibiotics actually have a number of long-term side effects that the medial establishment has previously failed to recognize – or at least report:
They’ve changed health and medicine over the last 70 years. But when doctors prescribe antibiotics, it is based on the belief that there are no long-term effects. We’ve seen evidence that suggests antibiotics may permanently change the beneficial bacteria that we’re carrying.
Honing in on the obesity connection, a studyconducted in April 2011 involving Dr. Blaser found that people treated with antibiotics had a 6-fold increase in post-meal ghrelin, a 20 percent increase in leptin levels, and a 5 percent increase in body mass index 18 months after completing the course of antibiotics. Ghrelin, of course, stimulates the brain in such a manner that leads to not only increased appetite, but also particularly leads to the accumulation of fat in abdominal fat tissue.  This type of fat is associated with metabolic syndrome and an increased risk of diabetes.

Dr. Blaser explains:
…antibiotics for H. pylori trick the body into eating more by disrupting hunger hormone levels. Indeed, mice given antibiotics get fatter than their untreated counterparts despite having the same diet.
It is very likely that further research will come out exposing a number of other adverse health effects from antibiotic usage, just as with BPA and antipsychotic drugs. Of course, antibiotics are potentially creating the mental illnesses through gut bacteria depletion which the suicide-linked antipsychotics aim to ‘treat’, playing into the pharmaceutical food chain.

Thankfully, a number of powerful natural antibiotics exist that do not come with such harsh side effects. Concerned over the destructive effects of antibiotics, research has concluded that various amino acids are actually preferable to antibiotics when it comes to treating infection. Other natural options for combating bacteria and infections include:
  • Garlic
  • Echinacea
  • Goldenseal
  • Wild Indigo

Consciousness: What You Don't Know Might Kill You

Consciousness: What You Don't Know Might Kill You by Vaishali

Ever ask yourself, "Where does consciousness come from?" Or, "Can consciousness come from an absence of consciousness?" Albeit, not the subject of your everyday discourse, these are still interesting and relevant questions. When inquiring about consciousness a valid qualifying question might be, "What type of consciousness are we talking about?" For example, dreaming consciousness comes from the REM cycle. A medical coma consciousness comes from pharmaceutical drugs. Enlightenment consciousness comes from meditation or some other practiced ability to observe and focus attention. However, when it comes to your physical consciousness, such as how emotional and mentally astute you are and how healthy you are on a cellular level, the answer might surprise you.

The Eastern sciences, such as Indian or Tibetan Ayurveda and Chinese medicine, have a very clear-cut and direct answer to this last aspect of consciousness. These ancient sources of wisdom say that the food you eat is the foundation upon which your emotional, mental and physical well-being is based upon. Ayurveda has a very succinct term for the physical body. It is referred to as the "Food Sheath." They call the physical body that because it requires a myriad of different types of food. It requires oxygen food, light food, physical "tactile" food, hydrating water food and solid alimentary food, all as sources of nourishment. The "Food Sheath" term eliminates all the "judgment" issues from the physical -- no charges about the butt being too big or small, no painful comparisons or emphasis on beauty of any kind. The body is simply the "Food Sheath."

The physical body or "Food Sheath" receives its quality of intelligence from the food you eat. We're not talking brain science or rocket surgery here. If you start your morning by drinking nothing but coffee and eating a donut, then you run around all day, some time in the afternoon you are going to start tanking. You will find it increasingly difficult to focus and concentrate. You will find yourself becoming more and more agitated and impatient when life's daily dose of obstacles smacks you right on your... food sheath. You may experience shaking of the extremities or a headache. You may find your mind easily distracted and unable to remember simple details: Where are my glasses, keys or cell phone?

As stated in age-old philosophy and co-opted by the high-tech world, "garbage in; garbage out." That's because a calorie is not a calorie. The quality of your energy comes directly from the quality of the food/fuel you take in. Now Ayurveda goes deeper with this understanding than may initially seem self-evident. For example, if you eat a lot of foods that have been grown to produce no seeds, such as some types of oranges or watermelon, over time, that could compromise your body's fertility. After all what are seeds? They are highly concentrated forms of fertility consciousness/energy. Bear in mind these types of food would have to be pervasive in your diet and you would have to be exposed to these fertility-sterilized forms of foods consistently for prolonged periods of time. It is unlikely anyone is going to eat that much seedless fruits with no diversity. But what if all crop seeds were sterile? Would that change the dynamics?

With that in mind, let's now look at a pervasive form of food that we have all been exposed to for a prolonged period of time: GMOs. Genetically modified food organisms. Even though GMOs are foods that have been genetically injected with extremely poisonous material, the FDA in its infinite wisdom has declared that these foods do not require any testing whatsoever. In fact, the FDA has never done any testing on them! Monsanto has been legally, genetically poisoning our food supply for decades. It's no surprise that wildlife such as migrating birds will not touch a single kernel of GMO corn when growing side by side a crop of non-GMO corn. In fact no animal, other than humans, when given a choice, will consume a GMO food.

These animals intuitively know what Ayurveda and Chinese Medicine teach: Food is your first wave of either medicine or poison. When you eat foods that are packed with Chi, life force energy, your mind, body and emotions are energized. When you eat foods that are packed with antioxidants, your immune system becomes stronger and empowered to destroy free radicals, because that is where the consciousness that directs the body comes from. Conversely, when you eat foods that have been genetically altered to contain chemicals that are designed to kill and destroy life, how can that have a positive affect on your energy?

In addition to the GMO nightmare, Monsanto has produced "terminator seeds." These are seeds especially designed to die after one crop. They carry a sterilized energy that does not allow another generation of plants to grow. Why? Money. The farmer has to go back to Monsanto each and every growing season for more seeds, so Monsanto's profits have increased accordingly. It is pure and simple greed, even though the planet destroying consequences of this greed are neither pure nor simple.

How can Monsanto get away with poisoning our food supply? You may find it interesting to know that many high level FDA people are former Monsanto employees. And, that's right; you guessed it. Incestuously many of the upper level Monsanto employees are former FDA staff. Well, maybe it isn't interesting. Pathetic may be closer to the truth. We have the best politicians money can buy.

Most people are unaware of these healing sciences that have survived scrutiny for thousand of years. What they have to say about the quality of consciousness that feeds your health or disease is still relevant in today's world. You need to look no further than cancers, both common and exotic, which are on the rise, or that the rate of obesity and insulin resistant disorders like diabetes have been increasing exponentially. Attention deficit disorders and autism cases seem omnipresent. Isn't it interesting that the expansion of all of these diseases happens to magically correspond to the ever-increasing presence of GMO's in the American diet.

If you are thinking, "Oh, but I'm not eating GMOs," think again. You probably are; you just don't know it. Since the FDA has declared that foods containing GMOs do not have to be labeled as such, you are not informed that the food you are consuming is toxic. If you are not eating organic foods exclusively, if you are eating or drinking anything with high fructose corn syrup (sodas, ketchup, fruit juices), corn, soybeans, cottonseed, sugar beets, canola oil, most fast food meals or pre-packaged processed foods from large food corporations, you are most likely eating GMOs. For more information please visit this link.

What you may have become painfully aware of is that you are fatigued all the time. You may have noticed that you having a harder time concentrating or remembering things. You may have observed an increase in health issues or poor sleep. You may have sensed that the consciousness of the body is off in some way but have not yet connected all the dots. All of these are profound reasons to examine what you are consuming that is feeding the quality of consciousness that governs your human experience.

Socrates once commented, "The unexamined life is not worth living." If he were alive today, his consciousness cry might be, "The unexamined diet is not worth eating."

New Occupy Homes Coalition Links Homeowners, Activists in Direct Action to Halt Foreclosures - Democracy Now

www.democracynow.org - A loose-knit coalition of activists known as the "Occupy Homes" are working to stave off pending evictions by occupying homes at risk of foreclosure when tenants enlist their support. The movement has recently enjoyed a number of successes. Democracy Now! speaks with Monique White, a Minneapolis resident who is facing foreclosure and recently requested the help of Occupy Minneapolis. Now two dozen of its members are occupying her home in order to stave off eviction. Also interviewed is Nick Espinosa, an organizer with Occupy Minneapolis, and Max Rameau, a key organizer with Take Back the Land who for the past five years has worked on direct-actions that reclaim and occupy homes at risk of foreclosure. "The banks are actually occupying our homes," Rameau says. "This sets up for an incredible movement where we have a one-two punch. On the one hand, we're occupying them on their turf, and on the other, we're liberating our own turf so human beings can have access to housing — rather than them sitting vacant so that corporations can benefit from them one time in the future."

Occupy World: Chileans take to the streets

Occupy World: Chileans take to the streets - Occupy America

When OWS began in Chile, a homegrown movement had already taken off.

Thousands of students have marched through the Chilean port of Valparaiso to demand more money for public education and to show support for student leaders who met with lawmakers.

While most of the demonstrators were peaceful, some hurled rocks and other objects at police, who responded with water cannon and tear gas. Three police officers were hurt, and about 20 protesters were detained.

Magnesium Deficiency: The Source of Most Modern Chronic Illness?

Magnesium Deficiency: The Source of Most Modern Chronic Illness? by Daniel Taylor

To be in good health is a true blessing, and without proper nutrition a foundation for health cannot be built. I found this out the hard way. For several years I experienced severe fatigue daily, along with muscle spasms, weak teeth, shortness of breath, anxiety and generally not feeling well. I started to conduct research on the unpleasant assortment of symptoms that I was experiencing, and I repeatedly came across information on the essential element called magnesium. It turns out that the majority of Americans (80% or more) are magnesium deficient due to poor diet and soil depletion. Every symptom that I had was a sign of magnesium deficiency. Upon further research I discovered magnesium oil, which is easily absorbed - more so than pill form - through the skin via Transdermal Magnesium Therapy. After using the oil for several months, all of the symptoms have disappeared.

If i had gone to a doctor, instead of doing my own research, I likely would have been diagnosed with chronic fatigue syndrome or some other illness that would be "treated" with drugs dispensed from the Medical-Industrial Complex, masking the underlying nutritional deficiency. In my research I have found that nearly every symptom of magnesium deficiency has a specific corresponding pharmaceutical drug to "treat" it. The monetary impact to drug companies - in the event that widespread attention was given to Transdermal Magnesium Therapy - would be monumental.

Other than myself, I have family who have personally experienced the healing power of magnesium. Among other things, chronic indigestion and heart palpitations have been eliminated. Prescription drugs have been thrown out. Magnesium oil has been nothing short of a miracle for me, and I hope that this information will be helpful for those who read this report. I urge everyone who reads on to do their own research and take whatever course of action you feel necessary for your personal needs.

The Medical Industrial Complex

As we have covered, large foundations, namely the Carnegie and Rockefeller enterprises, are largely responsible for creating the industrial society that we have today. The medical establishment is no exception. "Their numerous projects and the unprecedented scope of their financial and institutional resources shaped the development of culture and the production of knowledge in the United States," writes Dr. Lily E. Kay. Our modern schooling system - also a product of the large foundations - does not teach the history of foundations in molding our society. Thus the process of invisible power is exercised on an unaware population. We see its effects, but the source remains unknown to the majority outside of certain professional classes, who remain compartmentalized. The "wide view" of society and its many issues is lost on many and we see the world through a straw.

The modern medical establishment is another product of the Carnegie/Rockefeller combine. As with the modern schooling system that they created, the modern medical system was designed to support the industrial society that the captains of industry forged - and to ensure the elite's dominance into the future.

The Rockefeller family's first philanthropic investment was the Rockefeller Institute for Medical Research, founded in 1901 with the guidance of Frederick Taylor Gates. It was the Rockefeller/Carnegie empire that led the overhaul of the American Medical Establishment in the early 1900′s. As author and researcher G. Edward Griffin notes in his book World Without Cancer, this overhaul was necessary. However, he warns that we need to investigate who initiated it and the motives that they held.

One of the ways in which this combine directed the medical establishment, and continues to do so today, was with the heavy influence of grant money. E Richard Brown writes in Rockefeller Medicine Men that,
"Medical researchers may be free of the influence of the medical commodity marketplace, but to win fame and fortune they must obey the rules of the medical research funds 'market.' Their dependence on foundation and government funding agencies restricts the range of problems and methods they may investigate and constrains their creative intellectual processes as well."
Thus, writes Brown, "...a growing interest group within the corporate class has a direct financial stake in the dominance of technological medicine."

The Magnesium Miracle

The essential, naturally occurring mineral called magnesium certainly does not fit into the world of technological medicine. While its effect on human beings health is often ignored by modern medicine in diagnosing illness, its importance cannot be understated. Dr. Mark Sircus, author of Transdermal Magnesium Therapy comments on the entrenched mindset of modern medicine,
"The pharmaceutical paradigm (agenda) just does not want its practitioners to see what is really the underlying cause of many of the dramatic diseases humanity is facing today; it does not want them to see, even though the evidence and studies are everywhere, that magnesium deficiency is a primary cause of the vast majority of chronic diseases and cancer."
It was called the "Beautiful Mineral" by the Chinese, and for good reason. In his book, Dr. Sircus documents the science behind magnesium and why it is so essential for our health. In fact, writes Sircus, without magnesium, there wouldn't be much life at all on earth. He writes,
"The capture of light energy from the sun is magnesium-dependent... Magnesium is the element that causes plants to be able to convert light into energy... The whole basis of life and the food chain is seen in the sunlight-chlorophyll-magnesium chain..."
banner 01
Ad
While magnesium is clearly vital for life, it is another mineral called calcium that has been given the spotlight. The majority of Americans eat a disproportionate ratio of calcium to magnesium. It is this distorted relation between the two that Dr. Sircus believes - and well documents - is responsible for a large percentage of chronic illness. "A healthy cell has a high magnesium and low calcium level... calcium becomes increasingly toxic in the face of any kind of magnesium deficiency..." writes Sircus.

If you suffer from muscle cramps, twitching eye lids, and generally tense body tissue, chances are that you have a magnesium deficiency. Magnesium and calcium have two different functions. Calcium is used when the muscles contract, and magnesium relaxes them.

Magnesium deficiency symptoms

Dr. Sircus documents the National Institute of Health's list of magnesium deficiency symptoms:
Early symptoms include one or more of: irritability, anxiety (including Obsessive Compulsive Disorder and Tourette syndrome), anorexia, fatigue, insomnia, and muscle twitching. Other symptoms include apathy, confusion, poor memory, poor attention and the reduced ability to learn.

Moderate deficiency symptoms can consist of the above and possibly rapid heartbeat, irregular heartbeat and other cardiovascular changes (some being lethal).

Severe deficiency symptoms can include one or more of the above symptoms; or more severe symptoms including full body tingling, numbness, a sustained contraction of the muscles along with hallucinations and delirium, (including depression) and finally dementia (Alzheimer's Disease).
In the increasingly toxic environment that we live in, magnesium is taking on an even more important role through its ability to detoxify the human body of heavy metals and toxins. Mercury, Fluoride and other toxins are assaulting our bodies every day. Without sufficient levels of magnesium in our bodies, our shields are down.

General nutrition is vital to good health, and magnesium is one of the foundational nutrients that our bodies need to perform well over 300 biochemical processes. As Codex Alimentarius and other tyrannical measures from the FDA crack down on supplements, everyone should take advantage of the availability of magnesium oil and other vital dietary supplements while we still can. Do yourself a favor and look into magnesium oil and transdermal magnesium therapy. I know from experience that it works.

Academic Impacts of Vegetarian Childhoods

Academic Impacts of Vegetarian Childhoods by Janet Raloff

Teens are always looking for creative excuses for late homework, low test scores, and waning attention in class. Any who stumbled onto a copy of the September American Journal of Clinical Nutrition may have uncovered the basis for a particularly novel rationalization: "My parents made me a vegetarian."

Plants do not make vitamin B-12, also known as cobalamin. Diets that eschew all animal products can therefore lead to B-12 deficiencies. Because the vitamin plays a key role in some brain functions, toddlers raised from weaning on strictly plant-based foods can experience delays in the acquisition of certain motor skills. In a few instances, infants in strictly vegetarian families have shown severe anemia, dramatic growth retardation, irritability, and in at least one case, went into a coma.

Now, researchers in the Netherlands find that even when parents begin adding animal-based foods to the diets of their formerly strict-vegetarian kids, neurological impairments may persist into adolescence.

Marieke W.J. Louwman and Wija A. van Staveren of the Wageningen Agricultural University and their colleagues assayed cognitive development in 72 young people, age 9 to 15. These included 48 boys and girls who had been raised initially, at least through age 6, on diets free of all animal products. Indeed, each of the formerly strict-vegetarian children had participated in the Dutch group's study that established early childhood neurologic impairments from cobalamin deficiency.

After learning of that earlier study's findings, parents began supplementing their kids' diets with animal products, usually milk or eggs. In the new work, the researchers compared the cognitive performance of these children to that in 24 kids who had been eating a general, meat-laced diet since infancy.

Subtle, Lingering Deficiencies

Each child completed a 90-minute battery of tests. These included assessments of reasoning, abstract thinking, spatial reasoning, ability to combine vague visual images into a meaningful image, attention span, computation speed, short-term memory, word recall, creativity, hand-eye coordination, and decision making.

The researchers also administered questionnaires that asked what each child had been eating over the past few days, and they assayed each volunteer's blood for both B-12 concentrations and a marker (elevated methylmalonic acid) of early B-12 deficiency.

In general, children who ate both plants and meats consumed about double the recommended daily allowance (RDA) for vitamin B-12. Most of those who had consumed B-12 deficient diets during early childhood continued during adolescence to take in less of the vitamin. In fact, although the median B-12 intake of these kids was close to the RDA, 60 percent showed evidence of B-12 deficiency, and 31 percent had intakes of less than 50 percent of the RDA, the researchers report. Though the youngsters now drank milk, ate eggs, or had switched to a meat-laced diet, their consumption of animal products remained too low in most cases "to restore and maintain adequate cobalamin," the researchers conclude.

The new cognitive tests turned up a link between B-12 status and academic skills.

Children who had eaten normal mixed diets all of their life outperformed those who whose both past and present intake of B-12 was beneath the RDA. In particular, kids deficient in B-12 scored substantially lower on tests measuring spatial ability, short-term memory, and "fluid intelligence", which was described as "the capacity to solve complex problems, abstract thinking ability, and the ability to learn."

These findings "point to discernible, though small, effects of cobalamin deficiency on intellectual functioning," van Staveren's group notes.

The researchers now suspect that because these kids were cobalamin-deprived through age 6, their bodies' stores of the vitamin "may never have reached optimal level, and moderate intakes may not have been sufficient for obtaining normal serum-cobalamin status."

...if it walks, swims, or flies

Louwman and van Staveren say that their findings may point to potential problems in all who avoid animal-based foods," whether because of medical reasons, beliefs, or poverty." The latter group could prove to be a huge share of those living in Asia, sub-Saharan Africa, and some countries in Central and South America.

In the United States, however, those most likely to be at risk are children whose parent choose for them to adhere to macrobiotic diets, which tend to exclude almost all foods except fruits, vegetables, and grains.

The new study indicates that parents of these and other strict vegetarians should be certain that some of their children's foods are fortified.

According to the National Research Council, the B-12 RDA for infants is about 0.3 microgram per day. Recommended intakes for older children scale with their size, based on the formula of 0.05 microgram B-12 per kilogram of body weight, up to an adult intake of 2 micrograms per day.

The typical American diet provides far more than that. Indeed, by eating fish, eggs, dairy products, meats, or shellfish, people can easily take in recommended amounts. Explains Victor Herbert of the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York, there's plenty of B-12 in "anything that walks, swims, or flies."

The microwave ate my attention span!

The new Dutch study might even provide crafty nonvegetarians some grist for their excuse mill,if they have been reading SCIENCE NEWS over the past few years. To wit: They might argue that any less-than-stellar academic prowess traces to their family's reliance on microwave cooking and heating.

Japanese research a few years back showed that microwave heating saps B-12 from dairy foods and meats at a higher rate than conventional stove-top and oven heating does. In one case, microwaving removed 30 to 40 percent of the vitamin.

However, alert teachers may be able to counter this particular claim by noting that the large B-12 losses occurred only during what might be considered excessive overcooking or heating, such as boiling milk in the microwave for 6 minutes.

Homeopathy: Modern Medicine's First Target

Homeopathy: Modern Medicine's First Target by Harvey Bigelsen MD

The following is excerpted from Doctors Are More Harmful Than Germs: How Surgery Can Be Hazardous to Your Health -- And What to Do About It, published by North Atlantic Books.

Hippocrates and Paracelsus, whom doctors hail as pioneers in the field, both practiced medicine more closely aligned with homeopathy than with modern, scientific medicine. Samuel Hahnemann, considered the father of homeopathy, tested his medicines on volunteers. (This was the first "evidence-based" medicine.) Hahnemann's research into each remedy's effectiveness helped to spread the popularity of homeopathy around the world.1 By 1900, homeopathy was a relatively old medical tradition. In the United States at that time, 43 percent of medical schools taught homeopathy, including one of the best schools in the world. Homeopathic formulations could be purchased through the Sears catalog by individuals who wished to care for their own health.2

However, the profession suffered greatly from infighting, complacency, the rise of the pharmaceutical industry, and opposition from modern, scientific medicine.3 The American Medical Association formed in 1847 to "improve the ethics" of medical practitioners and to put out of business those engaged in "traffic in secret remedies and patent medicine." 4 Homeopathy gained the unforgivable label of "quackery," its science and methods called into question by the new doctors directly competing with homeopaths for business. There were two other important reasons for the disdain of homeopathy by doctors: the idea that a person's illness was uniquely individual, and the fact that its remedies were inexpensive.

As the fledgling pharmaceutical industry grew in the early twentieth century, it supported AMA physicians and their education with money. Physicians and institutions responded with supportive research for the drug companies. Initially, no drug could be advertised in the AMA magazine unless the organization had approved it for therapeutic use. These actions laid the groundwork for a tight collaboration between doctors and drug makers, and it spelled the death knell for homeopathy as a mainstream, acceptable practice in the United States.5

The Politics of Modern Medicine

The entire modern medical system was built on the premise of naming the symptoms so that a drug could wage war against them. We have wars on people, wars on drugs, and wars on disease. We are told to fight our bodies, our feelings, our creativity -- we are told these things oppose natural order. We are told that our own body works against itself by developing autoimmune disorders. Why on earth would our body try to harm itself? This world, this earth, exists to fulfill all of our needs. Nature is not meant to kill us.

The short story about homeopathy could just as easily be applied to the fields of chiropractic, osteopathy, acupuncture, nutrition, massage therapy, naturopathy, and many, many more specialties. Chiropractors won a landmark decision in 1987 when an antitrust lawsuit was settled in their favor. In her published opinion, the district court judge stated that the AMA had conducted "a nationwide conspiracy to eliminate a licensed profession." This campaign included the encouragement of medical doctors to slander chiropractors as quacks, as well as to withhold treatment from patients who pursued chiropractic treatment. Noting the long-term damage to the reputation of chiropractic, the judge stated, "it is ethical for a medical physician to professionally associate with a chiropractor." 6

What is common among the professions listed above is that they cost far less than drugs, surgery, imaging, and laboratory tests. The AMA, through its state medical boards, in conjunction with the FDA and other local, state, and federal agencies, keeps a close eye on these practitioners in case they might claim to "cure," "diagnose," "treat," or "prescribe." Each profession noted has, at one time or another, experienced relentless legal pursuit. Any non-drug sold in this country must follow strict rules about labeling to avoid suggesting any "medical" or "health" benefit. Many manufacturers have been sued over such claims. Coca-Cola was sued in 2009 over alleged claims that its VitaminWater product has health benefits.7 Many would call these lawsuits spurious -- just as many people would say that quacks are everywhere.

These actions continue despite the fact that each state sets the laws and guidelines regarding what constitutes a health profession and who may practice it, from education to licensing and continuing education requirements. Very few states allow these practitioners to work within the modern health insurance system. Membership in the AMA is open only to medical doctors -- those with MD after their name -- and, since 1970, osteopaths.

Remember French biologist Antoine Béchamp? His revelations were marginalized because they conflicted with those of a more politically astute researcher: bacteriologist Louis Pasteur. Pasteur and Béchamp's political fight at the end of the nineteenth century set the stage for many of the factors that drive the politics of modern medicine.

The Need for Change is Evident

It's kind of funny to me, in a way, that I keep reading opinions by doctors like Dr. David Newman, who practices in a New York hospital emergency room. "We need doctors and patients to conceive of medicine and health in a totally different way than they have been taught in the last twenty to thirty years," he states, noting that, "In American culture, prescriptions and procedures have become surrogates for real health care and real dialogue." 8 Although Dr. Newman was making his point to support comparative effectiveness research, the truth of his remarks goes deeper. If you're a patient, it's easy to experience "real health care and real dialogue" -- see any other type of health practitioner!

Every person has a story to tell about his or her health. A current health problem has never arisen out of the blue, without warning. Disease and chronic conditions are not "sneak attacks." The story of a person's health is key to understanding not just how it arose, but how to address it. No single diagnosis is completely identical to another. Everyone's journey is different. But, most doctors don't listen, and if they do, what they hear is debatable: over three-quarters of doctors don't believe what their patients have to say. 9 Medical professionals end up recording their own impressions of what a person is feeling, and the result is that they "systematically downgrade the severity of patients' symptoms," says oncologist Dr. Ethan Basch.10

One woman came to me with one of the worst cases of rheumatoid arthritis that I've seen. Another woman cannot sit down or bend over as a result of internal surgical scars. Both saw their doctors for heavy uterine bleeding. Both were referred for hysterectomies to deal with the problem. Both also had their ovaries, appendixes, and gall bladders removed, since the doctors were going to open them up for the surgery anyway.

They were advised to remove the additional organs "for prevention."

A male client went to see his doctor for a PSA test. It was abnormal, so they did a biopsy, which showed cancer. His doctor told him that if he removed the prostate gland right away, the guy was "guaranteed" to never experience full-blown prostate cancer. The guy refused the operation, and his doctor said, "Okay, come back and see me in three months." Surgery was critical to saving the guy's life right now, but if he objected, he could wait and see?

Another woman was in her eighties when she had cosmetic dental surgery. Her dentist kept her in the chair for seven hours, and she began to pass out. He continued to work until they had to call an air ambulance to take her to the hospital. While she was being carried to the helicopter, the dentist ran alongside exclaiming, "Your mouth looks beautiful!" Why should you care about these people? Because they are illustrating an all-too-prevalent attitude of arrogance that exists within the medical profession. "There is a sensibility among some old-school clinicians that they have a better sense of their patients' experience than patients do themselves," observed Dr. Basch. 11 The problem is not so much that there are jerks in medicine. There are jerks in every occupation. But in medicine the "attitude problem" can -- and does -- affect patient care. Dr. Peter J. Pronovost, who advocates for better attitudes in the name of safety, explains that until changes were made at Johns Hopkins, where he works, "When confrontations occurred, the problem was rarely framed in terms of what was best for the patient. It was: 'I'm right. I'm more senior than you. Don't tell me what to do.'" Dr. Pronovost discovered something interesting when he began to look into the way medical professionals interacted with each other: "in every hospital in America, patients die because of hierarchy." 12

Attitude is an ethical issue for the medical community. At least one scholar has suggested that a doctor be required to change his or her attitude when it is likely to have a poor effect on his or her ability to practice medicine.13 To the parents of a little girl at Dr. Pronovost's hospital, that effect was devastating. "The mother and the nurses had recognized that the little girl was in trouble. But some of the doctors charged with her care wouldn't listen," he says. "So you had a child die of dehydration, a third world disease, at one of the best hospitals in the world. The word 'error' was never spoken. But it was crystal clear." 14

With modern, scientific medicine, doing good and not causing harm to the human being only seems to happen without fail in the presence of adequate regulations. I ask you, why is that?

Vitamin D Defeats Depression Naturally, Without Nasty Side Effects

Vitamin D Defeats Depression Naturally, Without Nasty Side Effects by Patrick Gallagher

Studied across a wide variety (81,000 count) of women of various paths and lifestyles, Vitamin D when found in natural food sources had been related to significantly lower depressive symptoms among women than those who do not consume foods rich in Vitamin D.

The researchers particularly involved in the study seem to be under the impression that Vitamin D, in addition to being a crucial part of the human body’s chemistry, may directly affect the functioning dopamine and norepinephrine receptors, causing an imbalance in the brain which may lead to depressive symptoms.

It’s not a secret that Vitamin D is known to fend off depression.

A study among the elderly in 2006 showed that those with lower levels of vitamin D were many times more likely to be depressed as those with healthy doses, sometimes upwards of 11 times more likely.

Depression improved even with vitamin D levels significantly lower than optimal

The most current study revealed that those who consumed more than 400 IU of Vitamin D from food sources was correlated with up to a 20 percent lower risk of depressive symptoms, when compared to those who consumed 4 times less.

Unfortunately 400 IU is but a scratch on the surface of the benefits that could be reaped from this powerful necessity: Most adults should be taking upwards of 5,000 IU into their systems daily in order to partially receive these benefits.

Such increased effects, though intended fully by nature to be harvested from the sun, can be found in supplemental packages as well as sparsely in some food groups.

Though it is better to get it from the sun, supplements will sustain the body’s need for this crucial component of both mental and physical health. Ironically enough, sunlight exposure is something argued against by public health departments in order to prevent cancer when in fact the Vitamin D accumulated from such exposure actually prevents cancer.

5,000 Haitian Cholera Victims Sue U.N. After Deadly Epidemic Kills 6,000, Sickens 450,000

5,000 Haitian Cholera Victims Sue U.N. After Deadly Epidemic Kills 6,000, Sickens 450,000 - Democracy Now

www.DemocracyNow.org - A lawsuit has been filed on behalf of more than 5,000 Haitians against the United Nations over the cholera outbreak that has further devastated Haiti in the aftermath of the January 2010 earthquake. Some 450,000 Haitians have been sickened and more than 6,000 have died since the cholera outbreak erupted in October 2010, just over a year ago. It is widely believed the cholera was brought to Haiti by a battalion of Nepalese troops with the U.N. peacekeeping force. In a complaint to the United Nations, the attorneys for the Haitian victims also accuse the organization of reckless failure in containing the outbreak, arguing it is "directly attributable to the negligence, gross negligence, recklessness and deliberate indifference" for the health and lives of Haitians. "Time after time the response has been to deny the allegations. We're hoping that this is the case that's too big to fail. That the evidence against the United Nations is so overwhelming here that the U.N. will have no choice but to finally take responsibility for its malfeasance," says attorney Brian Concanon of the Institute for Justice and Democracy in Haiti. "What we're asking for, what our clients are asking for, is the U.N. and international community to step up and to give Haiti the sanitation infrastructure it needs to stop the epidemic."

Vaccinations May Be Primary Cause of Hepatitis B in the World: WHO Promotes Vaccinations, Not Health

Vaccinations May Be Primary Cause of Hepatitis B in the World: WHO Promotes Vaccinations, Not Health - Gaia Health

The World Health Organization’s announcement of self-destruct hypodermic needles reveals a secret they’ve kept hidden away for years: The vaccination program itself may be the single biggest cause of Hepatitis B infections in the world.

The pressure to vaccinate in developing nations has resulted in the routine reuse of needles. According to the WHO, about 21.7 million new cases of Hepatitis B, and 1.3 million deaths from it, are caused by the practice of reusing hypodermics.

The Hepatitis Foundation International estimates that there are about 350 million people in the world who are infected with Hepatitis B. Most infected people live for many years with the disease, and most do not die of it.  Clearly, the vast majority of new cases in the developing world must be from the vaccination project!

This, clearly, isn’t news to the WHO, but it certainly hasn’t been advertised.  It’s been hidden away until now, when forced disposal is being initiated.

The new needles self-destruct by either locking the plunger into place or cracking the barrel as it’s used.  This, of course, will result in major cost increases in vaccinations—costs that developing nations can ill afford.

Promoting Vaccinations Instead of Health

The entire vaccination program ignores that most vaccinations are not needed if people are healthy. When they have adequate nutrition, water, and sanitation, their health allows them to manage most of the vaccinatable diseases When money is diverted into vaccination campaigns, then less is available to provide water, toilets, and food—the most basic requirements for health.. As a result of increasing the cost of vaccination, the true solution to most of these diseases is moved ever further out of reach.

Vaccinations do not provide health. They are not among the basic requirements for life.

When vaccines supplant the provision of basic needs, then the system that does so is distorted. It must be corrupt. We’re seeing this in Haiti, where people’s obvious need for clean water, which is the perfect cholera prevention technique, is ignored by the WHO, and giving cholera vaccinations is considered the greatest priority.

Surely, it should be obvious that providing the basic requirements for health should be the primary function of the World Health Organization. However, as is obvious from their vaccination campaign, which is clearly spreading Hepatitis B, health promotion is not their real goal. The WHO’s primary purpose is to promote the use of medical treatments that bring profits to Big Pharma. Therefore, instead of promoting food security, clean water, and sanitation, they promote vaccinations and a campaign to equate vaccinations with health in the public mind.

I have just learned that Sandy Mintz wrote about Hepatitis B knowingly being caused by vaccinations…back in 2002!

Spain's Stolen Babies: Catholic Church Caught Child Trafficking

Spain's Stolen Babies: Catholic Church Caught Child Trafficking - Global Research TV

It is no surprise that the Catholic Church has once again been caught in yet another child trafficking scheme - this time in Spain.

The Protect Your Children Foundation is keeping track and exposing the organized crime of the Catholic Church so far in order to alert and warn the nations. The Catholic Church has murdered over 50,000 native children in Canada at Residential schools administered by nuns, 500,000 children stolen by nuns in Catholic Mother-Baby homes in Australia, another 500,000 in Canada. Not to mention more than 30,000 women tortured and abused in Ireland's Magdalene Laundries and more than 30,000 children abused in the Catholic residential schools of Ireland - to name a few.

No longer can the nations deny that these are isolated cases. It is obvious that the organization known as the Catholic Church is the worst criminal organizaiton in existence, utilizing the Lord's name to gain trust and commit crimes against humanity.

Study Says Pesticides in Food Chain Causes ADHD in Children

Study Says Pesticides in Food Chain Causes ADHD in Children by Dave Stancliff

Pesticides threaten our health, yet we still use them in America today. In the Vietnam War, herbicides (a subclass of pesticides) and their deadly effects created a dark legacy that still lingers.

Many Americans have heard about Agent Orange and are aware that the Veterans Administration has recognized numerous ill effects it had on people who were exposed to it. Not so well known is that nine of the 12 most dangerous and persistent organic chemicals are pesticides, according to the 2001 Stockholm Convention findings on Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs).

The result of the convention was an international environmental treaty, which went into effect in May 2004. The aim was to eliminate or restrict the production and use of POPs, defined as "chemical substances that persist in the environment, bio-accumulate through the food web, and pose a risk of causing adverse effects to human health and the environment."

In the early 1960s, we sprayed Agent Orange in Vietnam as a defoliant. It contained dioxin, but the chemical companies assured everyone that dioxin occurred naturally in the environment and was not harmful to humans. They knew better.

In March 1965, Dow official V.K. Rowe convened a meeting of executives of Monsanto, Hooker Chemical, which operated the Love Canal dump, Diamond Alkali, the forerunner of Diamond-Shamrock, and the Hercules Powder Co., which later became Hercules Inc.

According to documents uncovered years later, the purpose of this meeting was "to discuss the toxicological problems caused by the presence of certain highly toxic impurities" in samples of 2,4,5-T. The primary "highly toxic impurity" was 2,3,7,8 TCDD, one of 75 dioxin compounds.

With all the information that has been collected on the subject of pesticides then and now, you'd think we would have quit using them decades ago. Not so. We're still using pesticides, and - worse yet - our food chain is polluted with them.

According to new research published in the Journal of Pediatrics, levels of pesticides commonly encountered across the country in food as well as around the home significantly increase children's risk of developing attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and could be causing an increase in the number of children living with the condition.

Pediatrician and public health expert Phil Landrigan, M.D., professor and chair of the department of community and preventive medicine at Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City, said in a recent interview with MSNBC,
"For most people, diet is the predominant source. It's been shown that people who switch to an organic diet knock down the levels of pesticide by-products in their urine by 85 to 90 percent."
There you have it. The public continues to buy over-the-counter weed sprays for their yards in the mistaken belief they're not harmful. Big Agri absolutely depends upon pesticides in nearly all the crops they grow. The corporations continue to claim the new pesticides are safe. Deju vu, anyone?

In spite of the history of Agent Orange and all we've learned about the lies the chemical corporations have told in the past, pesticides are harming a new generation.

Some of these corporations are the very same that were caught lying about Agent Orange in the 1970s. That's why military members who served overseas and were exposed to it are getting disability ratings now. Their children face numerous problems traced to their exposure. Birth defects have been documented.

Now the children of civilians face significantly increased risk of developing ADHD because our food chain is contaminated with pesticides.

Parents are told to give organic food to their children in the study's summary. Easier said than done. Organic food costs considerably more than pesticide-ridden food. Besides, what kind of message does that send? If you can't afford organic, you have to eat food exposed to chemicals with serious side-effects.

So what can be done? Urge lawmakers to stop pesticide use. I know there are organizations - for example, http://.nospray.org/ - and individuals trying to do that now. You could support them.

As It Stands, unless we make some big changes in the way we grow our food, our eventual harvest will be a grim one for the next generation.

American economy deliberately allowed to fail? - RT

The state of the American economy to some is no accident. There have been many key factors that have taken place to bring the American economy to where it is today. According to Donald Goldmacher, co-producer for the documentary Heist, it all started falling apart with a deliberate dismantling of middle-class prosperity, ramped deregulation and jobs being outsourced. Goldmacher joins us and gives us his take on who stole the American dream.

In 'universal' flu shot push, medical industry admits current flu shots are useless

In 'universal' flu shot push, medical industry admits current flu shots are useless by Ethan A. Huff

(NaturalNews) The medical community is in the process of unveiling a "universal" influenza vaccine that it claims will prevent all flu strains with a single jab. The only problem is that, in the process, the system has inadvertently admitted that current flu shots are medically useless because they fail to target the correct flu strain in many cases, and they do not stimulate a natural flu-fighting immune response even when the strain is a match.

A recent report by CBS 11 News in Dallas / Fort Worth explains that researchers from the University of Texas (UT) Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas have identified a compound they say spurs the growth of a key protein known as REDD-1, which prevents cells from becoming infected. By injecting this compound into patients, REDD-1 will increase, say the researchers, and thus effectively prevent any strain of flu from taking hold.

But what about current flu vaccines? Dr. Beatrice Fontoura, one of the head researchers involved with the new universal flu shot, explained to CBS 11 that it works differently than current flu shots because it "stimulates our own (immune) response which is already there and boost[s] it to fight an infection."

In other words, flu shots being sold today at pharmacies across the country do not actually promote natural immunity at all, which begs an important question. If current flu shots do not boost the immune response, then what, exactly, are they good for?

Not much, according to a recent study published in The Lancet. Though the mainstream media widely reported that the study's findings showed an effectiveness rate of 60 percent for flu shots, actual data in the study reveal that flu shots help about 1.5 out of every 100 adults. This, of course, translates into a measly 1.5 percent effectiveness rate (http://www.naturalnews.com/033998_i...).

And yet, for years, medical professionals everywhere have been hounding the public to get their flu shots or else face horrific sickness and even death. And those who continue to avoid the flu shot based on concerns about its safety and effectiveness have been routinely dubbed "anti-science," or worse.

Ironically, the CBS 11 piece about the universal flu shot also contains an interview with a woman who admits that she stopped getting the flu shot because it made her sick every single year. Once she stopped getting flu shots, she stopped getting the flu. So why, again, do we even need a universal flu shot?

Finding Freedom in Handcuffs

AP / Bebeto Matthews
Police arrest Occupy Wall Street protesters as
they staged a sit-down at Goldman Sachs
headquarters on Thursday in New York.
Finding Freedom in Handcuffs by Chris Hedges

Truthdig columnist Chris Hedges, an activist, an author and a member of a reporting team that won a 2002 Pulitzer Prize, wrote this article after he was released from custody following his arrest last Thursday. He and about 15 other participants in the Occupy Wall Street movement were detained as they protested outside the global headquarters of Goldman Sachs in lower Manhattan.

Faces appeared to me moments before the New York City police arrested us Thursday in front of Goldman Sachs. They were not the faces of the smug Goldman Sachs employees, who peered at us through the revolving glass doors and lobby windows, a pathetic collection of middle-aged fraternity and sorority members. They were not the faces of the blue-uniformed police with their dangling cords of white and black plastic handcuffs, or the thuggish Goldman Sachs security personnel, whose buzz cuts and dead eyes reminded me of the East German secret police, the Stasi. They were not the faces of the demonstrators around me, the ones with massive student debts and no jobs, the ones whose broken dreams weigh them down like a cross, the ones whose anger and betrayal triggered the street demonstrations and occupations for justice. They were not the faces of the onlookers—the construction workers, who seemed cheered by the march on Goldman Sachs, or the suited businessmen who did not. They were faraway faces. They were the faces of children dying. They were tiny, confused, bewildered faces I had seen in the southern Sudan, Gaza and the slums of Brazzaville, Nairobi, Cairo and Delhi and the wars I covered. They were faces with large, glassy eyes, above bloated bellies. They were the small faces of children convulsed by the ravages of starvation and disease.

I carry these faces. They do not leave me. I look at my own children and cannot forget them, these other children who never had a chance. War brings with it a host of horrors, including famine, but the worst is always the human detritus that war and famine leave behind, the small, frail bodies whose tangled limbs and vacant eyes condemn us all. The wealthy and the powerful, the ones behind the glass at Goldman Sachs, laughed and snapped pictures of us as if we were a brief and odd lunchtime diversion from commodities trading, from hoarding and profit, from this collective sickness of money worship, as if we were creatures in a cage, which in fact we soon were.

A glass tower filled with people carefully selected for the polish and self-assurance that come with having been formed in institutions of privilege, whose primary attributes are a lack of consciousness, a penchant for deception and an incapacity for empathy or remorse. The curious onlookers behind the windows and we, arms locked in a circle on the concrete outside, did not speak the same language. Profit. Globalization. War. National security. These are the words they use to justify the snuffing out of tiny lives, acts of radical evil. Goldman Sachs’ commodities index is the most heavily traded in the world. Those who trade it have, by buying up and hoarding commodities futures, doubled and tripled the costs of wheat, rice and corn. Hundreds of millions of poor across the globe are going hungry to feed this mania for profit. The technical jargon, learned in business schools and on trading floors, effectively masks the reality of what is happening—murder. These are words designed to make systems operate, even systems of death, with a cold neutrality. Peace, love and all sane affirmative speech in temples like Goldman Sachs are, as W.H. Auden understood, “soiled, profaned, debased to a horrid mechanical screech.”

We seemed to have lost, at least until the advent of the Occupy Wall Street movement, not only all personal responsibility but all capacity for personal judgment. Corporate culture absolves all of responsibility. This is part of its appeal. It relieves all from moral choice. There is an unequivocal acceptance of ruling principles such as unregulated capitalism and globalization as a kind of natural law. The steady march of corporate capitalism requires a passive acceptance of new laws and demolished regulations, of bailouts in the trillions of dollars and the systematic looting of public funds, of lies and deceit. The corporate culture, epitomized by Goldman Sachs, has seeped into our classrooms, our newsrooms, our entertainment systems and our consciousness. This corporate culture has stripped us of the right to express ourselves outside of the narrowly accepted confines of the established political order. It has turned us into compliant consumers. We are forced to surrender our voice. These corporate machines, like fraternities and sororities, also haze new recruits in company rituals, force them to adopt an unrelenting cheerfulness, a childish optimism and obsequiousness to authority. These corporate rituals, bolstered by retreats and training seminars, by grueling days that sometimes end with initiates curled up under their desks to sleep, ensure that only the most morally supine remain. The strong and independent are weeded out early so only the unquestioning advance upward. Corporate culture serves a faceless system. It is, as Hannah Arendt writes, “the rule of nobody and for this very reason perhaps the least human and most cruel form of rulership.”

Our political class, and its courtiers on the airwaves, insists that if we refuse to comply, if we step outside of the Democratic Party, if we rebel, we will make things worse. This game of accepting the lesser evil enables the steady erosion of justice and corporate plundering. It enables corporations to harvest the nation and finally the global economy, reconfiguring the world into neofeudalism, one of masters and serfs. This game goes on until there is hardly any action carried out by the power elite that is not a crime. It goes on until corporate predators, who long ago decided the nation and the planet were not worth salvaging, seize the last drops of wealth. It goes on until moral acts, such as calling for those inside the corporate headquarters of Goldman Sachs to be tried, see you jailed, and the crimes of financial fraud and perjury are upheld as lawful and rewarded by the courts, the U.S. Treasury and the Congress. And all this is done so a handful of rapacious, immoral plutocrats like Lloyd Blankfein, the CEO of Goldman Sachs who sucks down about $250,000 a day and who lied to the U.S. Congress as well as his investors and the public, can use their dirty money to retreat into their own Forbidden City or Versailles while their underlings, basking in the arrogance of power, snap amusing photos of the rabble outside their gates being hauled away by the police and company goons.

It is vital that the occupation movements direct attention away from their encampments and tent cities, beset with the usual problems of hastily formed open societies where no one is turned away. Attention must be directed through street protests, civil disobedience and occupations toward the institutions that are carrying out the assaults against the 99 percent. Banks, insurance companies, courts where families are being foreclosed from their homes, city offices that put these homes up for auction, schools, libraries and firehouses that are being closed, and corporations such as General Electric that funnel taxpayer dollars into useless weapons systems and do not pay taxes, as well as propaganda outlets such as the New York Post and its evil twin, Fox News, which have unleashed a vicious propaganda war against us, all need to be targeted, shut down and occupied. Goldman Sachs is the poster child of all that is wrong with global capitalism, but there are many other companies whose degradation and destruction of human life are no less egregious.

It is always the respectable classes, the polished Ivy League graduates, the prep school boys and girls who grew up in Greenwich, Conn., or Short Hills, N.J., who are the most susceptible to evil. To be intelligent, as many are at least in a narrow, analytical way, is morally neutral. These respectable citizens are inculcated in their elitist enclaves with “values” and “norms,” including pious acts of charity used to justify their privilege, and a belief in the innate goodness of American power. They are trained to pay deference to systems of authority. They are taught to believe in their own goodness, unable to see or comprehend—and are perhaps indifferent to—the cruelty inflicted on others by the exclusive systems they serve. And as norms mutate and change, as the world is steadily transformed by corporate forces into one of a small cabal of predators and a vast herd of human prey, these elites seamlessly replace one set of “values” with another. These elites obey the rules. They make the system work. And they are rewarded for this. In return, they do not question.

Those who resist—the doubters, outcasts, renegades, skeptics and rebels—rarely come from the elite. They ask different questions. They seek something else—a life of meaning. They have grasped Immanuel Kant’s dictum, “If justice perishes, human life on Earth has lost its meaning.” And in their search they come to the conclusion that, as Socrates said, it is better to suffer wrong than to do wrong. This conclusion is rational, yet cannot be rationally defended. It makes a leap into the moral, which is beyond rational thought. It refuses to place a monetary value on human life. It acknowledges human life, indeed all life, as sacred. And this is why, as Arendt points out, the only morally reliable people when the chips are down are not those who say “this is wrong,” or “this should not be done,” but those who say “I can’t.”

“The greatest evildoers are those who don’t remember because they have never given thought to the matter, and, without remembrance, nothing can hold them back,” Arendt writes. “For human beings, thinking of past matters means moving in the dimension of depth, striking roots and thus stabilizing ourselves, so as not to be swept away by whatever may occur—the Zeitgeist or History or simple temptation. The greatest evil is not radical, it has no roots, and because it has no roots it has no limitations, it can go to unthinkable extremes and sweep over the whole world.”

There are streaks in my lungs, traces of the tuberculosis that I picked up around hundreds of dying Sudanese during the famine I covered as a foreign correspondent. I was strong and privileged and fought off the disease. They were not and did not. The bodies, most of them children, were dumped into hastily dug mass graves. The scars I carry within me are the whispers of these dead. They are the faint marks of those who never had a chance to become men or women, to fall in love and have children of their own. I carried these scars to the doors of Goldman Sachs. I had returned to living. Those whose last breaths had marked my lungs had not. I placed myself at the feet of these commodity traders to call for justice because the dead, and those who are dying in slums and refugee camps across the planet, could not make this journey. I see their faces. They haunt me in the day and come to me in the dark. They force me to remember. They make me choose sides. As the metal handcuffs were fastened around my wrists I thought of them, as I often think of them, and I said to myself: “Free at last. Free at last. Thank God almighty, I am free at last.”

How The Pharmaceutical Industry Has Mastered The Art Of Creating and Naming Diseases

You may think there is enough disease in the world already, and that no one would want to add to the diseases that we humans must deal with. But there is a powerful industry in our society that is working overtime to invent illnesses and to convince us we are suffering from them.

This effort is known as "disease mongering," a term introduced by health-science writer Lynn Payer in her 1992 book Disease-Mongers: How Doctors, Drug Companies, and Insurers Are Making You Feel Sick. Payer defined disease mongering as "trying to convince essentially well people that they are sick, or slightly sick people that they are very ill." This strategy has also been called "the corporate construction of disease" by Ray Moynihan, Iona Heath and David Henry in the British Medical Journal. "There's a lot of money to be made from telling healthy people they're sick," they say. "Pharmaceutical companies are actively involved in sponsoring the definition of diseases and promoting them to both prescribers and consumers."

Disease mongering got rolling in 1879 with the invention of Listerine, which was originally considered a surgical antiseptic. It was named for the famous English surgeon Joseph Lister, who performed the first antiseptic surgical procedure. Soon, however, Listerine's inventors, Dr. Joseph Lawrence and Jordan W. Lambert, were selling it in concentrated form as a floor cleaner and as a treatment for gonorrhea. In 1895 they began to market it to dentists for oral care, and in 1914 it became the first over-the-counter mouthwash marketed in the United States. By the 1920s, the Lambert Pharmacal Company, Listerine's maker, was confident they had found a cure; now all they needed was a disease. So they made one up: "halitosis." Before that time, halitosis was an obscure medical term that almost no one had heard of. Advertisers began to promote Listerine as a cure for this condition, which, they said, could blight anyone's chances of succeeding in romance, marriage and work. Soon, people all over America were suffering from halitosis.

The trick was to inflate a common, everyday condition to the level of pathology, which, if not attended to, could blight one's prospects for personal happiness and success. The ads the Listerine marketers crafted were mini-soap operas, in which people risked social shame and failure unless they used the product.

The Listerine marketers refined the marketing techniques that were pioneered by the patent-medicine makers of the 19th century. Novelist Henry James was so vexed by these hucksters he called them "nostrum-mongers." His brother, Harvard psychologist William James, who is considered the father of American psychology, was also exasperated by them, saying that "the authors of these advertisements should be treated as public enemies and have no mercy shown."

Payer identified several disease-mongering tactics. Among them:
  • Taking a normal function and implying that there's something wrong with it and that it should be treated
  • Describing suffering that isn't necessarily there
  • Defining as large a proportion of the population as possible as suffering from the "disease"
  • Defining a condition as a deficiency disease or as a disease of hormonal imbalance
  • Recruiting doctors to spin the message
  • Using statistics selectively to exaggerate the benefits of treatment
  • Promoting the treatment as risk free
  • Taking a common symptom that could mean anything and making it sound as if it is a sign of a serious disease
Healthcare watchdogs are now blowing the whistle on the major pharmaceutical companies who are engaged in this activity, and they have identified several "illnesses" as current examples of disease mongering. They are not saying these conditions don't exist - they are indeed problematic for some people - but that their incidence and relevance is wildly exaggerated in the pursuit of corporate profits. Among these "illnesses" are erectile dysfunction, female sexual dysfunction, bipolar disorder, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), restless legs syndrome, osteoporosis, social shyness (also called social anxiety disorder and social phobia), irritable bowel syndrome and balding.

Why should we be concerned about disease mongering? There is a huge psychological burden in thinking of ourselves as diseased when we are not. Beyond the psychological cost, there are financial costs, both personal and social. Treating these "illnesses" with pharmaceuticals is not cheap. Moreover, no tax-funded healthcare system can sustain the cost of drug treatment for all the risks for which the drug companies would like to treat the population.

Reversing disease mongering won't be easy. There is a near-limitless amount of money to be made from marketing pharmaceutical remedies for diseases that exist mainly in the imagination, and there are powerful economic, political, and professional interests who desperately want this process to continue.

The way forward may be in immunizing ourselves psychologically against the messages from Big Pharma that invade our lives on every hand. We have to learn to stop being suckers.

How? Heath believes our fear of suffering and death make us susceptible to disease mongering. Today, because the comforts of religion are no longer real for many people, death seems more final, resulting in a panicky rush to use anything that offers better health and increased longevity. So it may be that the best way to resist disease mongering is not to beat our heads against the fortress of Big Pharma, but to develop the psychological and spiritual maturity that makes us resistant to their efforts to instill fear and dread in our lives.

It's been said that one of the main ways we humans differ from other creatures is in our desire to take a pill. The pharmaceutical companies know that. Yet our health is determined mainly not by the pills we choose to swallow, but how we choose to live our lives - the ways we eat, exercise, work, play, love and relate to others. Realizing that, we can outsmart the efforts of the disease mongerers to pathologize every moment of our existence.
